… with Twiggy & the Wavescape Film Festival
BOS Ice Tea has caught a perfect wave by striking an endorsement deal with South African surfing legend, Grant “Twiggy” Baker.
The 37 year-old from Durban whose slight frame has earned him the nickname ‘Twiggy’ is regarded as one of the world’s best big wave surfers. His career highlights include winning 1st prize at some of the toughest competitions on the international circuit: The Maverick’s Big Wave Contest in California (2006), Red Bull Big Wave Africa (2008) and Quicksilver Punta de Lobos in Chile (2009). Twiggy also consistently performs exceptionally well at XXL: In 2008/9 he received both the Biggest Wave Award and Best Overall Performance Award while in 2010 he walked away with the Ride of the Year Award.
“We’re very proud to be affiliated with Twiggy,” says BOS Co-Founder, Richard Bowsher. “We share his passion for surfing, South Africa, and his personal philosophy of continually pushing his boundaries and exploring new territories. His professional achievements aside, Twiggy’s love and respect for nature resonates strongly with BOS”
BOS is also sponsoring the 2011 Wavescape Film Festival, currently on in Cape Town and featuring 23 of the world’s most exciting surf films. The festival formally launches on the 8th of December 2011 with an Art Exhibition and Charity Auction showcasing 12 surf boards, individually decorated by well renowned artists like Brett Murray, Pete Eastman, Richard Scott, Zapiro and Guy Tillim. All money raised at the event will be donated to charities including the NSRI, Shark Spotters and the Isiqalo Foundation (AIDS awareness organization).
On Friday 9 December, the film component of the festival kicks off with the annual and well anticipated outdoor screening on Clifton 4th Beach. Festival goers are encouraged to arrive early, bring a blanket and picnic basket, and enjoy the sunset (and some BOS Ice Tea!) before the screening starts at about 21:00. This year the public will be treated to two short surf films, “Thirty Thousand” and “Leave a Message” – if watching beautifully crafted films about a sport (and an art) form under the stars on a beautiful beach is not enough reason to get you there, maybe the fact that it’s free (!) and that there’s lots of prizes up for grabs will do the trick.
After Clifton, festival goers can catch more films at the famous surfers’ pub the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay, from 11th to 14th December and at the Labia Cinema, from the 15th to the 19th December.
“We decided to support Spike and his Wavescape festival because they combine fun, outdoor adventure, and creativity – and these are things we are all passionate about,” says Richard Bowsher, BOS Co-founder and lifelong enthusiastic surfer.
Tickets are R30 for the screenings at The Brass Bell and The Labia Theatre. The Surfboard Art Exhibition and Clifton 4th beach screening are free. For more information on the films and line-up go to www.wavescape.co.za Twitter/WavescapeSA, Facebook/WavescapeSA or call the info line on 079 0260 669.
